DIY Cloth Wipe Solution

One of the main reasons why people decide to use cloth diapers is to save money. By using cloth wipes and a homemade wipe solution you will be able to cut your diapering expenses almost completely in just a few simple steps! I have been searching for a while now for a cloth wipe solution that I liked, that didn't have to many ingredients, and that would leave Baby A completely clean! After testing out a few different recipes I decided to just take the ingredients from various recipes and combine them to make my own.

*Please take note that what works for me and Baby A, may not work for you child. Mommy's Craft Obsession is not responsible for any sensitivities that your child may have so please use this recipe at your own risk. We are not medical professionals and are not claiming to be. Use at your own risk.

I have decided to show you how to make just a small mason jar sized amount of the solution to encourage you to try it out for a handful of diaper changes to make sure that this recipe will work for your child's skin. Feel free to adjust the recipe accordingly.

What You Need:
A Clean, Empty Mason Jar (standard size, or adjust accordingly)
Olive Oil
Baby Body Wash
Tea Tree Oil (optional)
Witch Hazel (has healing properties and leaves skin feeling refreshed)

Start by pouring approximately an inch of witch hazel into your mason jar! You will want no more than 1/4 of the mason jar filled as it is recommended to use a 3:1 ratio of water to witch hazel.

Next pour in about a 1/2 tablespoon of olive oil, 2-4 drops of tea tree oil (tea tree oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties, however for the solution we are mainly using it for scent, so feel free to use this option out), and 2 "squirts" of baby body wash.

Next, fill the remainder of the mason jar with water and shake it up! It's that simple!

Because the olive oil will separate and float to the top of the water, you will want to make sure that you shake it before use. I recommend pouring the solution into a travel sized spray bottle, or even a perry bottle to put it onto your cloth wipe easier, however you can put solution on the wipe by simply placing the wipe over the mason jar and very slowly pouring onto the wipe. Regardless of how you put it on the wipe, your babies booty is sure to be squeaky clean when you are finished cleaning him (or her)!

*Please remember to use this recipe at your own risk, what works for my baby's skin may not work for yours. We are not medical professionals and are not claiming to be. Use at your own risk.

  1. I need to try this! I am new to cloth diapering and I was wondering what to,do about wipes :) where do you get witch hazel?

    1. Hey Laura! I just toss my wipes in with the cloth diapers (in the pail) and wash everything together!

I bought the witch hazel a while ago, I want to say I found it at target? I would imagine that anywhere would have it though- Walgreens, CVS, Walmart, etc. it's pretty cheap too!

If you have any CD questions along the way feel free to email me at!

  2. I have bookmarked and plan on using this for my cloth diaper solution! I don't use J&J because they aren't cruelty free, so would you recommend that I get a sudsy cruelty-free soap or something that doesn't sud too much?

    1. Awesome!! I know about J&J, I've been using this same bottle of body wash since my son was born (it's a HUGE one) and I can't wait for it to be gone! I actually would say try to find one with no suds or minimal, you will need to shake the solution every time prior to use due to the olive oil congregating at the top and it's been driving me nuts that it gets foamy!

  4. Sounds simple enough. I've also heard that a 1:1 solution of water and witch hazel in a spray bottle works.

  5. I am going to be using cloth diapers so I figure I might as well use cloth wipes too! I'll definitely have to give this a try! Thanks!
