In Hospital Birth Plan {Free Template & Personal Example}

In the final weeks leading up to the birth of your child, I feel that it is important to sit down either on your own, or with your spouse, and think about the birth that you really want. Now, some of you may have been thinking about it since you found out that you were pregnant and that is great! But have you written down your overall goals and what you want from your birthing experience? Many not know where to start or how to get it down on paper, so I am excited to share with you today a very simple birth plan template and also share with you my own personal birth plan for Little Boy! This particular birth plan is geared toward those who will be birthing in a hospital. I personally do not have any experience in home birth's or birthing centers, so while I imagine those birth plans would look similar- I honestly do not know! Feel free to use the template below to create your own birth plan regardless of where you plan on giving birth!

While everyones opinions will differ on what makes a good birth plan, my outlook on it is simple: include your basic but important information, and include everything that you can think of to help assist the nurses and doctors during your hospital stay. I often refer to labor and delivery as an adrenaline rush, at least it was for me, and during said adrenaline rush you may not be thinking completely clearly - this is where your birth plan comes in!

Feel free to copy/paste the birth plan template below to help create your own birth plan, or you can also visit the Google Doc and download it as a PDF or Word Doc!

I am happy to share my birth plan with Little Boy with you, but please keep in mind that we are two different people with different opinions, outlooks, and goals. What works for me, may not work for you and there is nothing wrong with that! This is a judgement free zone. Personal information and potentially controversial topics have been "blacked out".

  2. This is great! Thanks for sharing! I had a birth plan with my first baby but because of medical complications it seemed nothing went as planned. I am expecting my 4th baby and definitely plan to try again with the birthing plan!

  4. Birth plans are nice in theory. I think this a good one but as someone who has interacted with health care providers as a colleague these are not often taken seriously by people in hospitals. It is best to make sure you talk with your physician or midwife prior to labor to be sure that he or she supports your desires and that you talk through with him or her about what type circumstances where certain desires might not be met. Your physician or midwife are more likely to be cooperative with these types requests if they know about them well ahead of time and will be more likely to advocate for you in the hospital as well. Additionally, a doula is a great asset to help you carry out your "birth plan."

  5. This is a great idea, just make sure that whoever is with you at the birth is on the same page. If you are in pain or on any pain killers your judgement is as clear and your plan may not go as you want (and you also have to plan for the unplanned).
