The letter you are about to read is a letter that I have written several years in advance, to my 2 year old sons future bride. As my wedding date approaches I find myself thinking about how I plan to spend my future with my fiancé, and the woman that I hope my son will someday find. This letter is straight from my heart and I hope that it will inspire you all to write to your children's future spouses, as I feel it is so important to keep your hopes and dreams near the surface so that you may always be reminded of what you live for. Enjoy!
To The Woman Who Stole My Sons Heart, His Future Wife,
As I approach my wedding day, I sit here thinking about the woman that I want my son to someday marry, and wonder if I am fulfilling my own expectations to my soon-to-be husband. In about 2 months I will become a Mrs., and I hope more than anything that I will fulfill my hopes to be the type of wife that I expect you to be to my son. As I write this letter you, I realize that there is a great possibility that you're still in diapers and won't meet the love of your life, my son, for several years, but with my heart so full of love I feel the uncontrollable urge to write this to you now, and save for when the time is right.
When I fell in love with your soon-to-be father in law, I was 19 years old. I knew instantaneously that I would marry him someday, be the mother of his children, and grow old with him. To our surprise, things happened slightly backwards and our son, your future husband, was born prior to us getting married.
Although he came as a surprise, the overwhelming joy and love I feel for him still to this day, takes my breath away. Does he take your breath away? I hope he does.
You see, you stole his heart and have now promised to marry him, just as I promised to marry his father when he proposed on that cold California beach in December of 2011.
When I think about the type of wife I want for my son, I think about the type of wife that I plan to be. I know in my heart that it won't be easy, because as you know now, the man you love is the son of his father. The challenges that I will face during my marriage my dear, are more or less same struggles that you will face as well. But with the obstacles come those absolutely amazing moments that you will hold near to your heart and cherish for a lifetime.
There will be times in your marriage that you'll want to give up and throw in the towel, but at the end of the day you'll look into those beautiful hazel eyes, just as I look into his fathers, and smile on the inside knowing this incredibly stubborn man loves you and has promised his life to you.
When you stand before your friends and family and speak your wedding vows to my son, you will glance into the crowd and see the adoring faces of your friends and family, but my son will only see you. Your beauty, grace, and kindness…the woman he will share his life with.
So as you prepare to become his Mrs. please keep in mind just a few of the things that I, his mother, need you to be for him.
His best friend.
His biggest supporter.
The mother of his children.
His partner in crime.
The reason he smiles.
The one who lifts him when he's down.
His other half.
and most importantly,
The one who stands by his side until the day that he dies.
Because as much as I hate to say it, I'm not the woman he turns to anymore. You are.
Your future mother in law.
