Homemade Cheesey Crackers

If your child is anything like mine, Goldfish Crackers might as well be their own food group. Baby A loves snack foods but store bought snacks can have tons of fillers, and like me, I can't imagine that you want to feed your little one things you can hardly pronounce. 

While passing the time on Pinterest not to long ago I came across a recipe for homemade Goldfish! The recipe was easy and fairly quick- right up my ally! The original recipe was found on Key Ingredient! Below is my adaptation of it! Enjoy!

What You Need: 

Blender or Food Processor
8 oz of Cheddar Cheese (we used mild)
4 Tablespoons of Butter, Cut Into Cubes
1 Cup of Flour
3/4 Teaspoons of Salt
2-3 Tablespoons of Cold Water


What You Need To Do:

Start by preheating your oven to 350*. In your blender or food processor, combine cheese, butter, flour, and salt and pulse until the dough is grainy, closely resembling course sand. Add in one tablespoon of water at a time, pulsing the mixture between tablespoons. The original recipe called for only two tablespoons but my mixture was to dry so I added the third and it was perfect! 





Once your dough is ready, remove it from your blender/food processor and form it into a ball (or something that closely resembles it) and wrap it in plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for approximately 20 minutes.


Once your dough has been refrigerated for 20 minutes, use a rolling pin to roll your dough as thinly as possible. 


Once your dough is rolled you can then cut it into whatever shapes you'd like for your crackers! At first I thought that using a frosting tip would be a great idea to cut circle shaped crackers, but I quickly realized that it was in fact a bad idea because it was challenging to get the dough out of the frosting tip. If you have the time to get the dough out then this is a great way to create perfect circles! 


After quickly giving up on circles I moved onto attempting to cut shapes with a knife. Although a lengthy process, using a knife does give you the ability to make fun shapes such as stars or triangles, but I was growing impatient and was ready to eat some crackers, so I quickly brainstormed for another way to cut the dough quickly.


The lightbulb went on when I realized that I could use my Funbites to cut the dough into perfect squares for the crackers! With the help of my handy little tool I was able to get about four batches of crackers cut for our enjoyment!


On a greased cookie seat (I used olive oil) line up your crackers and bake for 15 minutes or until they're to your desired crispiness!



Store your crackers in an airtight container and enjoy!

  3. Are they soft or crunchy? Baby K only has three teeth lol but she eats pretty much anything

    1. They're pretty soft! I think Baby K would do fine with them, perhaps if you broke them into tinier pieces too! They're not crunchy like a goldfish cracker or anything ;)

  4. Yum! I've seen all sorts of "make your own goldfish cracker" pins on pinterest - but I've always been too intimidated to try them out. This looks easy and super yummy. I have a little girl who loves to munch on crackers - but our grocery budget doesn't always allow for extra treats like that. Making them at home is a perfect alternative. Thanks for sharing!
