DIY Mod Podge

For those of you scratching your head and asking yourself "What the heck is Mod Podge?", let me give you a simple answer. Mod Podge is a crafters best friend. Mod Podge is a glue based substance that is used for TONS of craft projects, but specifically for decopauge. I have used Mod Podge for making coasters, decorating mason jars, making decopauge art, and many other random things! I have seen it be used to adhere photos to tables (decorating a coffee table) and used on homemade bulletin boards. Mod Podge is amazing, but its SO darn pricey! If you use it a lot, you're going to be spending a pretty penny. So why not make it? Don't you hate when you look at the ingredients on something and feel like they're written in jibberish? Let me lay it out simple. To make Mod Podge, you will need two simple ingredients and a mason jar. We're going to call my version Fod Podge (Fake Mod Podge, hehehe).

What You Will Need:

Water
Elmer's Glue
A Mason Jar (any size)

How to Make "Fod Podge":

You may use any size mason jar you'd like, just make sure you have a lid to seal it with! This stuff lasts forever, seriously, I've had this bottle for almost a year and it is fine.

Take your mason jar and fill it half way with Elmer's glue. Fill the other half with water. Attach the lid and shake shake shake shake shake.

Seriously, that's it.

  1. Mod Podge is so expensive, I am too glad to hear that you can make this for pennies! Thank you!

  2. I see people using Mod Podge everywhere. I always go into the store to buy it but walk out empty handed because it is so expensive. I can't believe that this is how you make it!

  3. Ugh! Amazing! I am the craft leader of a mommy group, and we have a limited budget. This will be so nice! No more spending an arm and a leg for mod podge. Just made sugar scrubs and we decorated the jars with scrapbook paper and used tons of it! :-)

  4. Since school just got out glue is on clearance EVERYWHERE. That being said, I've heard the only problem with this stuff is that it's not waterproof like real Mod Podge. But I think I'd be willing to try it on a couple products, could always finish up with a clear coat spray paint if I need it to be water proof, I suppose. I wonder if anyone's ever had any problems with it though...

  5. Wow, I didn't know it was so simple to make. This is much better than paying for mod podge at a craft store. Thanks!

  6. Back in my day we just used glue, but you had to be really careful about air bubbles, and sometimes you'd rip the picture trying to get them out. When my daughter told me about Mod Podge, I told her that glue was much cheaper, but she assured me Mod Podge was better, even though it was expensive. I'm going to share this with her, and maybe try some of her projects with her!
