DIY Toothpaste

Since becoming a stay at home mom a little over a year ago, I have had a little extra time on my hands.  I have decided to put some of that time in to researching and finding ways to cut back on some of the nasty chemicals we put into our bodies on a daily basis.  I'm amazed at how many chemicals are in lotions, soaps, toothpaste, etc. that we really don't need.  In my journey to find more natural options I came across this recipe for DIY toothpaste.  It's really easy to make and you probably have all the ingredients on hand.  I can't believe how much better my teeth look and feel using this compared to store bought toothpaste.  Even my hubby loves it, and he can be pretty picky about this kind of stuff.  He didn't care for the taste the first time or two that he used it but the results were so good he was willing to keep trying it.  After a few brushings you really do get used to the taste and its not that bad.  The original recipe I found called for stevia which you can view here but I really don't think it's necessary.  We have been using this for about four months now, and we both agree that our teeth are cleaner and whiter than ever!

What You Need
baking soda
coconut oil
peppermint essential oil
squeezable container or glass jar

Coconut Oil is anti-fungal and antibacterial.  It helps sooth your gums and stops bleeding.  It deters gingivitis, thrush, and can reverse tooth decay.

Baking Soda is great for eliminating odor as well as cleaning, it helps to neutralize the acids in your mouth that cause tooth decay.

Peppermint Oil is antibacterial and antiviral, it has mild anesthetic properties which could help with tooth pain, and it gives you that nice minty taste.

How to Make
Use equal parts of baking soda and coconut oil and desired amount of essential oil (I used about 25 drops).  Mix well.

  2. I have made this before and really liked it but couldn't find a good squeezable container. Where did you get yours? I would love to make my own toothpaste again, the fluoride free kind we buy is so pricey!
